FRONTEX operation at Romania’s external border


[iasiinvest.ro] The fifth stage of Jupiter joint operation held by the European Agency FRONTEX (European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union) was held for two weeks at Romania’s eastern and northern border, the press office of the Border Police informs on Wednesday.
The goal of this operation was the surveillance of the border with the aim of curbing illegal migration from the Russian Federation, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Asian countries, and of improving border controls, mainly of persons who exceeded allowed period of stay, persons who use false documents, persons who travel by stolen cars or persons who work in the black market.
Alongside Romanian border policemen participating in the operation were 18 representatives of EU member states from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, two observers from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, as well as  a 20-force contingent of the German Federal Police who participated in the operation with two EC-135 helicopters.
FRONTEX, is the EU agency based in Warsaw, was created as a specialised and independent body tasked to coordinate the operational cooperation between Member States in the field of border security. FRONTEX started to be fully operational on 3 October 2005. At the same time with the EU accession, Romanian Border Police became a full-fledged member of the European Agency FRONTEX.
