Interpol, Europol set up strategic links

Interpol and the European police force announced the signing in France of an agreement to coordinate efforts to tackle transnational organized crime.

„Identifying and developing areas for future joint actions between Europol and Interpol is very important to us and key to providing an even more integrated service to the international police community on both sides,“ Europol Director Rob Wainwright said in a statement.

Interpol and Europol officials, during meetings at the French headquarters of Interpol, said they would work to set up a communication link and collaborate on key transnational security threats such as cybercrime, child sexual exploitation and terrorism.

The agreement follows strategic meetings on piracy in the Gulf of Aden. The British government announced this week it was providing financial aid to U.N. agencies tasked with addressing piracy.

Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble said a holistic approach to transnational crime made sense for regional members.

„At a time when crime threats are becoming more complex and criminals are exploiting technology as well as physical and virtual mobility, our agreement is both a natural and necessary development in our strategic collaboration,“ he said.
