SEOUL — South Korean police said Wednesday they would put up movable security fences around the venue for this autumn’s G20 summit in Seoul to protect leaders from terrorist attacks and protesters.
The fence will encircle the Convention and Exhibition Centre (COEX) in southern Seoul, where leaders from the Group of 20 leading world economies will meet on November 11-12, a city police spokesman said.
He declined to give details, but Yonhap news agency said the 2.2-metre (7.2 foot) fences would have a concrete base and plastic mesh and would stretch for about 1.6 kilometres (one mile).
The barrier with about 800 segments can be moved to different locations, it said.
South Korea has tightened security for its biggest international event since the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Airports plan to start screening suspicious passengers with full body scanners from October 1 as part of the measures.
On Wednesday 81 labour and civic groups launched an umbrella protest organisation to stage a wave of demonstrations against the summit.
The organisation said it would begin a campaign from October 1 to oppose the summit, led by a militant union group that claims about 700,000 members and has headed a series of anti-globalisation protests in the past.
It plans to hold a „People’s Summit“ from November 8-10, followed by large demonstrations in Seoul along with international groups.
