SEOUL, Sept. 1 (UPI) — A single military command center will coordinate South Korean security operations during the Group of 20 summit in Seoul, officials announced Wednesday.
Leaders from the 20 leading economies are scheduled to meet Nov. 11 and Nov. 12. The chairman of the Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said about 10,000 troops will be involved in security for the event, the Yonhap news agency reported.
„The military has elaborate action plans and firm determination to counter any possible enemy threat,“ he said in a statement. „We will make utmost efforts to make the G20 summit in Seoul safer than any in the past.“
Military forces are to include navy vessels and fighter jets patrolling South Korean waters, ports and air space. The G20 Command Center will also work with the National Police Agency and other security services.
In addition to the normal security headaches involved in bringing so many leaders to a single city in an event that also attracts thousands of protesters, South Korea has to deal with increased tension with North Korea.
