[apa.az] The Coast Guard Working Group of the International Conference on Border Issues has gathered for its regular meeting in Baku, said Azerbaijan’s State Border Service.
The meeting was attended by experts from border services of eight countries (Azerbaijan, Estonia, Finland, Germany, the United States, Russia, Turkey and Georgia) and the EU agency for border security, FRONTEX.
The two-day meeting focused on the issues concerning the protection of oil and gas fields and infrastructure in the sea, and the sharing of experiences on methods for analysis of conditions in the maritime domain, as well as discussions about future plans of the working group.
Besides, the participants travelled to Azerbaijan State Border Service’s Coast Guard Base.
It was decided at the meeting to continue the discussion of issues related to border security at sea in the future, and meet for the 4th meeting in Baku in October 2010.
The working group operates under Azerbaijan’s State Border Service, and its main task is to provide appropriate assistance to enhance the protection of water boundaries, explore the legal framework for the Coast Guard, the exchange of positive experiences and information, make recommendations, more effective prevention of traffic of illegal migrants, drugs, contraband, weapons, weapons of mass destruction and their components through the water borders, and more successfully and promptly carry out the search and rescue operations.
