Army And Academia Partner on Nanotechnology in New Center

[smalltimes.com] The U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the State University of New York at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering have teamed to speed the development and commercialization of nanotechnology-enabled sensors and electronic devices. A memorandum of agreement signed by the two parties establishes the Center of National Nanotechnology Innovation and Commercialization, headquartered at the college’s NanoTech Complex.

The partnership aims to help the Army ensure research, development and applicability efforts for nanoeletronic technology’s use in emerging Army platforms and applications in areas such as sensors; command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR); and energy. Joint research will target the development of next-generation devices; structures and systems enabled by nanotechnology, including "sensor-on-a-chip" systems for counterterrorism and "soldier-in-the-field" remote sensing; lighter but stronger coatings that offer protections against chemical, thermal and environmental conditions; and sensor networks and electronic devices that provide multiple functions while operating at low power.
