The Romanian-Moldavian border, a top concern for the EU

[france24.com] The European Union is sending Western policemen into Romania to help Bucarest protect itself from illegal immigration. Illegal crossings at the Romanian-Moldavian border have doubled since last year.

Right here at the border between Romania and Moldavia the European Union struggles to protect itself from illegal immigration. As a result, since joining the European Union last year, Romania has been dubbed Europe’s caretaker. The Romanian borderline is now the Oriental fringe of the European Union. The most sensitive part of it is 700 kilometres long and separates Romania from the restless Republic of Moldavia.

The European Union is sending Western policemen into Romania, drawing on their know-how. ‚Frontex‘ was created last year and stands for the European Border Police Association. They have a presence at the Romanian-Moldavian border. In the Romanian fields they have installed the most reliable equipment and one can already see the results. The devices are able to follow any movement at night up to a distance of five kilometres. More and more potential illegal immigrants are now caught at this border. The trains arriving from the small neighboring republic of Moldavia are carefully searched… inside and outside. There are many who wish to come to Romania and they leave this country with fake documents, fake passports.

By 2011 Romania and the European Union will have invested more than a billion euros in the security of this border. The stakes are high since Romania, a transit country to Western Europe, increasingly appeals to would-be immigrants. Compared to last year, the number of illegal crossings has doubled. Romania looks like the best choice. It is due to join the Schengen agreement in 2011 – the magic door to freedom of movement in Europe.
