[unicri] The changing geopolitical climate requires international entities to
quickly adapt in order to meet new threats and challenges. UNICRI’s Lab
is expanding rapidly in order to help Member States meet those
challenges. Based on 5 years of experience in the Security Governance
and Counter-Terrorism field, UNICRI is launching the Security
Governance/Counter-Terrorism Lab of the United Nations.
At the heart of the UNICRI Lab is the concept of Security Governance.
Our expertise in the security field has led us to conclude that it is
time to apply security concepts to the governance arena. The core of
the Security Governance Matrix is to assist national structures
to respond to the new and evolving security environment. UNICRI
envisages a change of institutional culture among the major security
actors in terms of sharing information, meeting technical requirements
and developing the managerial skills essential for working in
multilateral and interdisciplinary situations.
Below is a simplified representation of the UNICRI Security Governance Matrix:
The UNICRI Lab is gathering information and carrying out
extensive analysis and testing in our areas of security intervention.
The UNICRI Lab maintains a strong regional approach. We
emphasize supporting and strengthening regional organizations because
they constitute crucial actors in Security Governance.
The UNICRI lab works efficiently in the midst of sensitive political issues
by maintaining a technical focus on problems such as illicit
trafficking of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear
materials, radicalization leading to terrorism and rebuilding rule of
law institutions. We are also active in areas not traditionally
addressed by the international community, including public-private
partnerships on security issues, security during major events and
illicit trafficking of precious metals and stones.
The Lab is composed of vibrant, energetic professionals from
all over the world. This international, intercultural composition
contributes to the diversity and depth of our programmes. Our criteria
for success is dynamism, creativity and, above all, innovation.
