A European expert team is paying a
first visit to Romania over March 23-29 to check the fulfilment of all
the requirements set on police cooperation, in order for Romania to get
the status of a full Schengen member state.

According to the Interior Ministry’s communication service, the
experts will draw up a report to include the evaluation team’s
conclusions and recommendations. The report is then to be approved by
the Schengen Evaluation Working Group based in Brussels.

The team is made up from experts of the Schengen member states, a
representative for the European Commission and a representative for the
European Union Council’s General Secretariat. The team is headed by a
Czech Republic official. Other Schengen evaluation missions are to be
carried out during 2009-2010 on such areas as personal data protection,
visas, maritime borders, air borders, land borders and the SIRENE
Schengen Information System.

Any state seeking to join the Schengen area should undergo such an
evaluation process, in which it must prove it has met all the
requirements to become a Schengen member.

The Schengen evaluation process is the responsibility of the Group
made up from the member states‘ representatives, and the
representatives for the European Commission and the EU Council’s
General Secretariat, the ministry explained.
