India: Cops to get a bird’s eye view with UAV

CHANDIGARH: Taking a step forwards modernisation, UT police have decided to purchase ‚ Golden Hawk ‚ an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) worth Rs 18 lakh to keep an eye on the city. The machine obtained on Wednesday from Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) would be tested for four months.

A successful demonstration was given by DRDO experts and scientists at IRB police lines in Sarangpur.

A senior DRDO official said, “UAV covers an area of 2km from the height of 100 metres through its modern camera and can also be used during night hours. It would return to base once short of battery power.“

IG (UT) P K Srivastva said that UT police would be the first state police of India that would be equipped with such a technique. The machine would be purchased after approval from ministry of home affairs.“ Police officials said that UAV would prove useful for keeping a vigil over protests, monitoring visits of VVIP and VIPs and for launching secret operations against criminals.

The machine is remotely controlled and sends a live telecast to the base station. SSP (UT) Naunihal Singh said that a police team would be sent to Bangalore-based centre of DRDO for training.
