Poland prepared to introduce border control procedures during Euro 2012

Polish Border Guard is prepared to restore border control during the Euro 2012 European Soccer Championships to be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine, local media reported on Sunday.

The decision whether controls on EU’s internal borders, that is on Poland’s southern and western borders, is to be made in December, Piotr Patla of the Polish Border Guard Main Headquarter told the PAP news agency.

Patla stressed that during the tournament, Polish Border Guard officers will be cooperating with their counterparts from Lithuania, Germany and Slovakia.

He added that officers will have at their disposal mobile terminals and special vehicles — Schengen buses.

Such mobile border control terminals may be necessary in case of reintroduction of border control procedures at border crossings on Poland’s western and southern frontiers. In many cases, border crossing infrastructure has been liquidated after Poland joined the Schengen zone.

The Euro 2012 soccer championships, slated for June 8-July 1, 2012, will take place in four Polish cities of Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan as well as four Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Lvov, Donetsk and Kharkov.
